A Tale of Two Vintages: 2021 & 2022
Over the past few months, I have had the pleasure of drinking a lot recent vintage Burgundy. While the 2023s are on the market (more on that to come), there is still a bit left from the short 2021 vintage kicking around, and lots of 2022. It is always interesting when two back to back vintages are as dichotomous as these; it is reminiscent of 2004 versus 2005 as well as 2010 and 2011. Looking at the 2021 alongside the 2022 reveals a tale of two very different weather patterns, challenges, and styles. It ultimately showcases just how important vintage character is in Burgundy, and why it is one of the very few regions in the world that can tell the tale of a year with such clarity.
